Devin Gordon Interviews Francis Ford Coppola on Apocalypse Now: Movies + TV: GQ

From this interview extract, can you guess the name of the filmmaker who Coppola is damning with faint praise?

I think he’s a wonderfully intelligent and competent director. But he doesn’t make personal films. Various people write the scripts, and he’s got it down how to lead a group and make the film. So it’s possible for him to make one film after another. But I don’t think of his films as more than very high quality Hollywood studio filmmaking. There’s a bit more eccentricity to [his films] because he’s so respected by the financier, so he can go his own way. But it’s a far cry from a kind of personal cinema, where the person is really creating the movie out of his own imagination.

The person in question is none other than… Clint Eastwood. The comments aren’t too harsh, I don’t think, but hopefully this will escalate into a war of words. Maybe even a messy punch-up at a red-carpet premiere. Are you feeling lucky, Coppola? Well? Do ya?
